Sometimes, you take a leap of faith that feels right and end up right where you’re supposed to be. Last spring, we brought home the first sheep this land had seen in a while, something that filled our pastures and our hearts with so much joy. We didn’t have a clear plan on what we wanted to do with these sheep yet - we were torn between raising breeding stock, starting a sheep dairy, or learning how to make yarn. Wool pellets weren’t even something we knew existed back then, and we definitely didn’t know how much of an impact they would make on our lives as time went on.
Fast forward to this spring, when we experienced our first shearing day. All of our sheep were freed of their fleeces, and we had to figure out what to do with all the wool they grew this past year. We tried to set up a skirting table and learned the hard way that our barn cat thinks it’s fun to play with the wool while we’re sifting through it…so it seemed like making these fleeces into something spinnable was out of the question, at least this year. Realizing how much effort would go into getting our wool in shape to become yarn, we began researching other options. We knew wool had its place in the garden, as we used to buy raw fleeces off of a local shepherd to mulch with. But we weren't sure what the market for that would be, and we learned the hard way that mulching with raw wool meant it sometimes got tangled up in the plants, came loaded with weed seeds, or just blew away. There had to be a better way!
Enter wool pellets. The solution to every issue I’d had with raw wool in the past. Pellets get buried in the soil with the plant, and come in compact packages that keep them contained until they’re where they’re supposed to be; no more windblown wool or tangled garden beds. And pelletizing solves the issue with weed seeds too: the heat from the pelletizing process kills any unwanted seeds present in the wool. We could get all the benefits of raw wool in the garden without any of the headache, and we were sold. The rest is history, and we’re so excited to share the joy of planting with wool pellets with you. Our wool goes from sheep to seed, providing all-natural nutrition to the plants that feed you.
